In the world of video games, the Commandos series has stood out for its tactical depth and engaging gameplay. The inaugural game in this series made its debut in June 1998, developed by Pyro Studios. Players assumed leadership of military operatives tasked with navigating WWII-era missions, each character boasting unique skills to be utilized strategically.
Commandos: Origins, now available as a demo on Steam ahead of its full release, promises to recapture the spirit of its predecessors. The series saw significant growth with Commandos 2: Men of Courage in 2001 and Commandos: Strike Force in 2006. However, despite these advancements, Strike Force shifted towards a more action-oriented gameplay style, which garnered mixed reviews and seemed to signal the end of the series until recent remasters like Commandos 2 HD Remaster (2020) and Commandos 3 HD Remaster (2022).
The Commandos: Origins demo includes one mission featuring two characters in single-player mode, hinting at a full game with 14 missions and six playable characters. This version is currently only available in English, as rights have been acquired by German publisher Kalypso Media since 2018. The demo occupies 24.5 GB of storage space and places players in the role of a Green Beret or diver tasked with sabotaging a German radar on the Channel Islands.
With its release date still unknown but the demo already accessible, Commandos: Origins offers a promising return to the roots that made this series iconic, blending strategic gameplay with WWII settings reminiscent of earlier installments.
