Wired Productions has announced its renewed partnership with Portuguese indie studio Camel 101 to publish the upcoming first-person survival-horror game, Beneath. Known for their previous collaboration on the psychological thriller Those Who Remain, the two teams are diving into the depths of Lovecraftian horror with this ambitious new project. A closed beta playtest is now open for sign-ups, offering players a chance to experience the game early and provide feedback.
A Deep-Sea Descent into Madness
Beneath places players in the role of Noah Quinn, a seasoned deep-sea diver whose routine expedition spirals into chaos. Trapped in a mysterious underwater world, Quinn must face dwindling resources, horrifying mutations, and creeping madness as he uncovers a sinister conspiracy threatening humanity. Drawing inspiration from iconic titles like F.E.A.R., Resident Evil, and Half-Life, the game blends action-packed combat with atmospheric storytelling and psychological tension.
The gameplay emphasizes survival mechanics, requiring players to manage scarce ammunition and supplies. Players can choose between stealthy evasion or direct combat against a variety of enemies, including ruthless soldiers and grotesque Lovecraftian monstrosities. The underwater setting adds an extra layer of challenge, as players must navigate oxygen limits and utilize a specialized dive suit to explore oceanic research stations and uncover hidden secrets.
A Promising Collaboration
Camel 101 describes Beneath as their most ambitious project to date. Ricardo Cesteiro, co-founder of Camel 101, expressed excitement about working with Wired Productions again, citing their successful partnership on Those Who Remain. Leo Zullo, Managing Director at Wired Productions, praised Camel 101’s passion and creativity, emphasizing Wired’s commitment to supporting independent developers.
The game also incorporates a dynamic sanity system, reflecting the protagonist’s psychological instability as he confronts otherworldly horrors. This mechanic adds depth to the gameplay by forcing players to balance exploration, resource management, and mental resilience.
Beneath is set to release on PC later this year. For those eager to dive into the abyss early, sign-ups for the closed beta are available now through Wired Productions’ official channels.
