The beloved arcade and Dreamcast shooter Under Defeat has officially launched on modern platforms, bringing its explosive action to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Published by Clear River Games in partnership with Japanese developer City Connection, this re-release offers a definitive edition of the cult classic with enhanced features and new content.
A Classic Revived with Modern Enhancements
Originally developed by G.rev and released in arcades in 2005 before making its way to the Sega Dreamcast in 2006, Under Defeat is a vertical shoot ’em up that puts players in control of combat helicopters battling across land, air, and sea. The game retains its signature semi-isometric perspective and unique mechanic allowing players to tilt their shots for strategic attacks. Whether solo or in two-player co-op, players will face waves of enemies, including tanks, warships, and aircraft.
This new version of Under Defeat, developed by retro port specialists City Connection, includes previously Japan-exclusive DLC content alongside three distinct game modes:
- Arcade Mode: A faithful recreation of the original arcade experience with a 4:3 aspect ratio and pseudo-vertical screen layout.
- New Order Mode: A widescreen 16:9 adaptation tailored for modern displays.
- New Order Mode+: Introduces new gameplay mechanics like the “WARNING GAUGE,” a risk/reward system that spices up the classic formula.
A New Soundtrack by a Legendary Composer
The re-release also features a newly arranged soundtrack by Shinji Hosoe, a veteran composer known for his work on iconic series such as Ridge Racer and Tekken. Hosoe’s company, Super Sweep, has brought fresh energy to the game’s audio while preserving its nostalgic charm.
