Dragonkin: The Banished Unveils Its Innovative Ancestral Grid Skill System

Eko Software and NACON have revealed a closer look at the unique skill system in their upcoming hack-and-slash RPG, Dragonkin: The Banished. Dubbed the Ancestral Grid, this mechanic offers players deep customization options to tailor their characters’ abilities and playstyles. The game is set to launch in Early Access on Steam on March 6, 2025, with a full release for consoles to follow.

The Ancestral Grid: A Puzzle-Like Approach to Skills

The Ancestral Grid reimagines traditional skill trees by introducing a dynamic, puzzle-based interface. Each of the game’s hero classes—Barbarian, Oracle, Knight, and Tracker—has its own unique Grid that evolves as players level up. Skills and modifiers are represented as hexagonal “Fragments,” which players acquire as loot throughout the game. These Fragments can be strategically placed on the Grid to unlock new abilities or enhance existing ones.

The system emphasizes experimentation and theorycrafting. Skills placed on the Grid are added to the character’s active abilities, while modifiers boost adjacent skills’ effectiveness. As players progress, they gain access to more powerful and complex Fragments, allowing for increasingly intricate builds.

Adding another layer of strategy is the dragonet companion, a young dragon that occupies its own spot on the Grid. This companion can trigger special effects, further enriching combat dynamics.

A World Shaped by Dragons

Dragonkin: The Banished is set in a world corrupted by dragon blood, where players must battle hordes of enemies and hunt down powerful Dragon Lords. Each hero class offers distinct abilities and combat styles influenced by draconic elements such as ice, fire, electricity, and poison. The game supports both solo play and co-op multiplayer for up to four players (though co-op will be fully implemented in the final release).

Beyond combat, players will also develop “The City,” humanity’s last bastion against dragon corruption. This hub evolves based on player decisions, unlocking new buildings, NPCs, and services that enhance gameplay.

Early Access Details

The Early Access version of Dragonkin: The Banished will feature three of the four planned hero classes and core gameplay systems like the Ancestral Grid and city-building mechanics. Eko Software plans to expand content throughout Early Access with additional characters, endgame modes, and balance adjustments based on player feedback.
