Red Hook Studios has unveiled a significant update for Darkest Dungeon II, introducing the free “Kingdoms” game mode alongside the paid “Inhuman Bondage” DLC. Both are now available for PC and Mac, with console releases planned for a later date. These additions aim to further enrich the game’s dark and strategic universe, offering new gameplay experiences and challenges for players.
Kingdoms: A Fresh Strategic Experience
The new “Kingdoms” mode reimagines Darkest Dungeon II‘s gameplay, diverging from the original “Confessions” campaign. This free update introduces a board game-inspired structure where players defend a persistent map of inns from incursions by new enemy factions. The first module, “Hunger of the Beast Clan,” tasks players with battling the ravenous Beastmen while upgrading and protecting their inns. With two additional modules planned for release later this year, “Kingdoms” promises high replayability and a strategic twist on the roguelike formula.
The mode emphasizes resource management, strategic hero placement, and time-sensitive objectives, creating a dynamic blend of exploration and defense. Players can customize their inns through upgrade trees, tailoring them to specific needs while navigating a world filled with perilous encounters.

Inhuman Bondage: New Hero and Region
The “Inhuman Bondage” DLC adds depth to both “Confessions” and “Kingdoms” modes with new content. It introduces The Catacombs, a high-risk mini-region teeming with corrosive threats and unique rewards. Players will face a fresh faction of enemies in this eerie underground setting, designed to challenge even seasoned adventurers.
Additionally, the fan-favorite Abomination hero makes its return from the original Darkest Dungeon. This character offers dual forms—human and beast—bringing unique mechanics that balance immense power with heightened stress management. The Abomination is equipped with exclusive trinkets, weapon kits, and a fully voiced origin story featuring playable flashback encounters.
